Women, Crime Statistics and Pepper Spray

As all of us – or at least most of us – know, personal attacks are on the rise around the world and have been for quite some time. Not only that, but these attacks are becoming more brutal than they had been in the past. Women get attacked more than men and are at greater risk. As a result, women are looking for ways to defend themselves.

The City of Hope released some statistics regarding attacks on women. The findings are:

• 1 in every 3 women across the world has been subjugated to rape or sexual assault. (Data: 2001)

• In some developing countries, at least one-third of the adolescent girls have been forced into sexual initiation (Data: 2002)

• Sex crimes in South Africa take place every twenty seconds. (Data: 2000)

• Major incidents of rapes have been reported in 12 African provinces. The rate has increased considerably from 182 in 2001 to 270 in 2002.

• 14,000 of the 331,815 reported crimes committed against women in the Russian Federation were rapes.

• According to a survey in the United Kingdom it was found that 19.4 % of the women there have been victims of some kind of sexual violence. (Data: 2001)

Now let’s take a look at the US

• One of the startling facts is that 1 in 3 American women are sexually assaulted in their lifetime.

• 89% of sexual crimes have been committed by someone known to the victim.

• In 2002, there were 247,730 victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault.

• In 2005-2006, there were 232,010 victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault.

• Around 44% of rape victims are under age 18, while 80% are under age 30.

As a result of these statistics, the sale of self-defense tools and weapons has skyrocketed. One product that is sold the most is Pepper Spray.

Pepper Spray comes in various forms, containers and sizes, and will disorient your attacker when used properly, giving you enough time to get away to safety and get help. Pepper Spray comes in a regular spray, foam and gel. All of these are effective because they will make the attacker’s eyes slam shut and start burning immediately, and start them coughing and having a hard time breathing. The gel has the added feature of sticking to the skin like glue and burning the skin, while the foam seeps into the skin like lotion and also burns.

Pepper Spray is easy to use, affordable, and can be carried in your pocket or purse. It can come in canisters that include regular spray cans, ball point pen disguises, lipstick disguises, cell phone disguises, and more.

It is essential that women find a way to protect themselves. Pepper Spray is an excellent, non-lethal way to do this. Don’t become a victim!

Buying Pool Alarms

Buying Pool Alarms

All over the United States, there are a large number of storefront retail locations and online retail stores that sell pool accessories. If you are a pool owner, regardless of whether or not you have children, you may want to consider buying a pool alarm.

One common misconception, when it comes to pool alarms, is who should have them. There are many individuals who mistakenly believe that pool alarms are only necessary for households with small children. While, families with small children may benefit the most from a pool alarm, they are not the only ones who may. Even if you do not have children, you may want to at least consider buying yourself a pool alarm. Not only could that alarm help to protect guests, but it could also protect children that just wander into your yard.

As with most other pool accessories, you will find that pool alarms come in a wide variety of different styles. Despite the different styles, all pool alarms have the same goal. That goal is to keep young, unattended children away from a swimming pool. In the event that they do make it near a pool, the pool alarm will alert you, and other adults, right away. This is why pool alarms are not just a pool accessory, but a lifesaving device.

If you are interested in buying an alarm for your pool, you will have to decide on an alarm style. By visiting your local pool supply store or by reviewing the available merchandise online, you should be able to familiarize yourself with the pool alarms that are currently on the market. In your search, it is likely that you will find underwater pool alarms, above water pool alarms, or gate alarms.

In a way, gate alarms are the most popular of all pool alarms. While the alarms are not actually installed in or around your pool, they are still considered pool alarms. This is because the alarm is positioned on the gate of your pool fence. Depending on the model you buy, most gate alarms will sound when someone passes through the gate unnoticed or if the gate door was accidentally left open. In a way, gate alarms are the most effective pool alarms on the market. By properly installing and using a pool gate alarm, your child may never even make it to the pool.

As popular as pool gate alarms are, not everyone can use them. If you do not have a fence installed along the exterior of your pool, you will want to examine other alarm types. One of these types may include a surface alarm, otherwise known as an above water alarm. An above water pool alarm is designed to sound when someone comes too close to the pool. Many of these alarms come with a preset barrier. Above water alarms, or surface alarms, are ideal because they can alert you before your child actually makes it into the water.

The only problem that you may find with above water alarms, or surface alarms, is that they tend to be easily set off, especially if your pool area is not gated in. Whether the wind blows debris past the alarm or an animal enters the area, it is likely that the alarm will sound. If you are looking for pool alarm that is less likely to produce error, you may want to consider buying an underwater pool alarm.

Underwater pool alarms are similar to surface alarms. Instead of detecting motion on the exterior of the pool, they detect motion in the interior. This means that if your pool alarm is set, you will be notified whenever something enters the water. Therefore, if your child happens to fall into the pool, your pool alarm will automatically sound; thus allowing you to rescue them.

How are Crime Statistics Collected and Tips on How to Prevent a Crime

In 1929, the International Association of Chiefs of Police started a program called the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program. This program was created to meet the need for reliable, uniform crime statistics in the nation. A year later, the FBI was responsible for collecting and publishing these statistics. Today, crime statistics are produced from data received by almost 17,000 law enforcement agencies in the nation. This data is then published through several annual statistical publications. This data is also used for special studies and reports on an annual basis.

Law enforcement agencies reported preliminary statistics for 2006, which resulted in an increase of 3.7 percent in violent crimes in the first six months of 2006 compared to the first six months in 2005. Violent crimes include murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.

Property crimes, which include burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft, actually fell 2.6 percent in the first half of 2006 when compared to the same period in 2005.

Arson, which is also a property crime but not included with the property crime data, increased 6.8 percent in the first six months of 2006 when compared to the first six months of 2005.

Crime in the U.S. is overwhelming. We have to help our law enforcement agencies, as well as ourselves and focus on the PREVENTION of crime.

There are a couple of ways you can help prevent the unthinkable. Couple these together for maximum safety. The first way is to read, recite and remember the do’s and don’ts when in public. A few suggestions are listed below. The second way is to deter an assailant if a crime is about to happen. Deterring an assailant can be difficult if you are not prepared. Preparedness means personal protection. Personal protection can be purchased in different ways. The most popular personal protection item is Mace or pepper spray, which comes in various sizes. Stun devices are also popular. Stun devices include stun guns and stun batons and come in various voltages and sizes. And there are many types of personal alarms as well.

Here are a few tips to remember:

AVOIDING VIOLENT CRIMES

Sexual Assault

1. Use initials instead of first names on mailboxes and phone listings.

2. Avoid remaining alone in an apartment laundry room or parking garage.

3. Never admit on the telephone or at the door that you are alone.

4. It is risky to accept a ride home from someone you have just met.

5. If you decide to physically resist assault, remember that your goal is to incapacitate the attacker long enough to run to safety and get help.

6. If you have been a victim of sexual assault, call police immediately. Do not bathe or change clothes or you may destroy evidence.

Robbery

1. Avoid carrying valuable items or large amounts of money.

2. Always think ahead. For example, when traveling at night, have your keys ready to enter the house or to start the car.

3. The best advice is to co-operate when confronted by a robber.

4. If you resist, there is a greater chance that you may be hurt.

Bank Machines

1. When using an automatic bank teller, always be watchful of any suspicious people around you.

2. The chances of being robbed at night are much greater, especially if you are alone.

3. If you find someone waiting and watching outside in the area of an ATM machine, do not use it. Leave the area and report the incident to the police immediately. You could save someone else from being a victim of crime.

Street Safety (Use Common Sense)

1. Stay in well-lighted, busy areas. Avoid walking alone and avoid known trouble spots.

2. When you carry a purse, hold it close to your body rather than by the handles. Do not wrap purse straps around your wrist, because you can get hurt in a struggle.

3. Carry only what you need in a purse or wallet, not everything you have.

4. Avoid using shortcuts through dark alleys, fields, or vacant lots.

5. If you think you’re being followed cross the street and change directions a few times. Go quickly to a well-lighted place with lots of people. Do not go home. You don’t want an attacker to know where you live.

Always remember, if you think a crime is about to be committed or you are in an uncomfortable or dangerous situation, dial 911.
